How We Can Help

The following are some signs that indicate services at South Shore Therapies could be beneficial:

  • Discomfort with touch that affects social interactions, emotional responses and/or activities of daily living such as dressing and eating.
  • A need to be in constant motion that limits safe and successful interaction at home and in school.
  • Clumsiness or poor coordination in motor activities creating difficulties in achieving age appropriate activities of daily living, gross, fine and oral motor development.
  • Difficulty maintaining a calm and regulated state, impacting sleeping, eating or behavioral interactions.
  • Inconsistencies in the ability to complete motor tasks causing frustration and lack of self esteem.
  • Oversensitivity to noises, either background, loud, or unexpected, that causes fear, anxiety, behavioral disorganization, or difficulty participating effectively in busy environments or events.
  • Poor articulation or rhythm of speech making it hard to understand what the person is saying.
  • Trouble participating in activities that involve eye hand coordination such as ball skills and handwriting.
  • Avoidance, anxiety or fear of daily movement activities such as being lifted in the air, leaning backwards, climbing playground apparatus or negotiating stairs and escalators.
  • Difficulties responding to questions or following several step verbal directions.
  • Decreased endurance for seated activities and/or tendency to fatigue more quickly than others when engaged in motor activities.
  • Extremely restricted food repertoire, with strong aversions to the look, smell, taste or texture of foods. 
  • Frequently responds to questions with “What?” or “Huh?”, or provides answers that seem off topic.
  • Poor body awareness impacting the ability to move smoothly and safely through the environment without tripping or bumping into things.
  • Difficulty organizing belongings at home, school and work.
  • Increased effort or frustration in fine motor activities such as dressing, using eating utensils, drawing and writing.
  • Delays in understanding spatial concepts; may get lost easily, not understand commands such as ‘behind you’, or avoid activities such as puzzles, Lego’s, shoe tying or drawing.  
  • Poor oral motor control causing slow or sloppy eating, and/or difficulty with drinking, chewing and swallowing.
  • Difficulty socializing with peers successfully.
  • Struggles in learning new motor activities or participating in tasks that have several steps impacting successful participation.

At South Shore Therapies we will develop a therapeutic program with you to produce ‘Results that Make a Difference’:  

  • Improved self regulation, less tantrums and meltdowns
  • Successful participation in birthday parties, going to the grocery store or movie theatre
  • Ability to get dressed in the morning without fights and tears
  • Clearer language and ability to communicate with others
  • Increased self esteem
  • Develop flexibility; meets a change of plans with a positive attitude
  • Easier time falling asleep and staying asleep
  • Desire to participate in family outings and recreational sports activities
  • Interacts without being ‘in your face’ or touching inappropriately
  • No distress with tooth brushing, hair washing, or nail cutting
  • Has a successful play date
  • New skills such as riding a bicycle or pumping a swing independently
  • Being able to sit, without constantly needing to bounce and move
  • Enters a new situation without fear and anxiety
  • More success and independence in daily routines
  • Increased food repertoire
  • Writes letters and numbers without reversals
  • Can hug without squeezing too hard
  • Greater success at school, comes home happy and excited about the day
  • Becomes strong enough to climb into car seat or bed independently
  • More organized approach to tasks
  • Plays successfully with other kids on the playground
  • Drooling stops
  • Desire and ability to sit and read a book with you
  • Participates joyfully in a gymnastics, swimming or music class
  • Uses a spoon or a fork an entire meal
  • Transitions from a preferred activity without a fight
  • Learns to tie shoes independently
  • Moves safely through the environment without crashing into things
  • Less frustration with homework
  • Tolerates sounds such as a vacuum cleaner or others talking without distress
  • Keeps up with the other kids in gym class
  • Follows directions without needing them repeated or demonstrated
  • Enjoys arts and crafts, coloring and drawing
  • Can swing on a playground swing or climb a jungle gym without fear
  • Ability to sit throughout family meal times
  • Successfully plays board games with friends or family
